THANK YOU!

On Friday, August 8th, 2014, the award-winning Canadian horror-thriller SILENT RETREAT had its Hamilton Premiere at Fright Night Theatre as part of a fundraiser for the SACHA sexual assault centre at the Staircase Cafe Theatre. Thanks to the generosity of the filmmakers, our sponsors, and fans, Fright Night Theatre was able to raise $244.52 in support of SACHA's services for survivors of sexual assault and abuse.

I would like to thank everyone who came out last week to support Fright Night Theatre's initiative to raise money for the SACHA Sexual Assault Centre. SACHA is a feminist, non-profit, community-based organization of women in Hamilton, Ontario guided by anti-racist and anti-oppressive values working to end violence in our community. SACHA offers several invaluable programmes such as a 24 Hour Support LineCounselling and AdvocacyDiverse Communities Outreach, and Public Education. Services are confidential and completely free of charge

Recognizing dynamics of gender and power in sexual violence and the importance of organizations like SACHA, Fright Night Theatre invited director Tricia Lee and writer Corey Brown to screen their feminist horror film SILENT RETREAT in Hamilton as an official selection of Fright Night Theatre. We were honored to have Lee, Brown, and star Robert Nolan join to celebrate women in the horror industry, to raise money for SACHA, and to share their thoughts about how horror and the horror industry can be empowering to women.

We were also  joined in our efforts by a number of stellar local sponsors and local artists who donated valuable prizes, perks, and original artwork for our charity raffles. Fright Night Theatre would like to thank the following sponsors who were crucial in making our fundraiser a success:

August 08: SILENT RETREAT & SACHA FUNDRAISER

Fright Night Theatre is thrilled to announce the next installment in its competitive screening series: SILENT RETREAT

After taking home the award for Best Canadian Feature at Toronto After Dark and completing an extended theatrical run, director Tricia Lee's critically acclaimed horror thriller meets creature feature SILENT RETREAT will be making its Hamilton Premiere at Fright Night Theatre on Friday, August 08, 2014! In addition, Fright Night Theatre will be donating all net proceeds from the screening directly to SACHA - the sexual assault centre of Hamilton.

In SILENT RETREAT,  Janey (Chelsea Jenish), an orphaned
young woman with a troubled past, is sent to a
rehabilitation camp for young girls as an alternative to prison. The doctor overseeing this shady operation  (Robert Nolan) enforces a very strict policy: absolutely no speaking or noise-making whatsoever. No personal items. No direct eye contact with the camp administrators. What looks on the outside to be a rehabilitation camp quickly shows itself to be something far more sinister: a misogynistic experiment in social programming. Failure to comply, however, is punished not at the hands of the administrators but by the tooth and claw of a dangerous creature that stalks the dense, dark woods. The only way to survive the silence...is to SCREAM. Directed by Tricia Lee. Written by Corey Brown. CANADA, 2013, 84 mins. Screening with the short film PITY (dir. John Pata).
Director: Tricia Lee

PHOTOS: Return to Nuke 'Em High: Volume 1 (Hamilton Premiere)

The Tromatons were off the scale last Saturday night for the Hamilton Premiere of Troma's RETURN TO NUKE 'EM HIGH: VOLUME 1 at Fright Night Theatre!

PHOTO GALLERY SLIDESHOW

Before a sold-out capacity crowd full of Cretins and diehard Tromaniacs, Horror in the Hammer kicked off its first Fright Night Theatre screening of the year with Lloyd Kaufman's latest offering of boobs, blood, and bad taste. Our official selections -- short film Killer Kart and feature film Return to Nuke 'Em High: Volume 1 -- caused a nuclear explosion of laughter and applause that blew the roof off the Staircase Theatre. In the nuclear fallout, we were joined by the Troma team -- including the Toxic Avenger himself -- as well as a special on-screen Q&A with Return to Nuke 'Em High stars Asta Paredes, Catherine Corcoran, and Clay von Carlowitz and a live panel with actors and crew Brenda Rickert, Mick O'Keefe, T.J. Smith, Matt Lord, and John Migliore.

Following the Q&A, all Cretins in attendance were invited up for our Cretin Costume Contest, with hundreds of dollars in prizes to be won courtesy of our magnanimous sponsors FANGORIA and HAMMER CITY RECORDS. We even raffled off a screen-used Tromorganic Foodstuffs poster.

But the fun didn't end there: those passionate enough to brave the snow joined us for beers and even more prize giveaways at The Winking Judge Pub for our official After-Party.

Thanks to everyone who came out to our Hamilton Premiere screening of Return to Nuke 'Em High: Volume 1 and a special thanks to all our volunteers and promotional sponsors for making our first Fright Night of 2014 a rousing, radioactive success.
