FRIGHT NIGHT THEATRE 2014 AWARD WINNERS

This year, Fright Night Theatre is proud to have exposed genre fans to some of the best independent Canadian and international horror, thriller, and exploitation films of 2014 as part of our first-ever competitive screening programme. First, we took die-hard fans back to the boobs and blood of Tromaville for Return to Nuke'Em High (Volume 1). We tuned in to the mystery of German horror-thriller Radio Silence. We delved deep into the monstrous Canadian woods for a fatal Silent Retreat. Then we capped things off by skewering the New York art scene from the greasy hot dog cart of Bag Boy Lover Boy.

It's been a stellar season, and we're now thrilled to announce the winners of the first annual FRIGHT NIGHT THEATRE AWARDS, chosen by you the audience and our tireless team of film programmers.

$244 Raised for SACHA Sexual Assault Centre

THANK YOU!

On Friday, August 8th, 2014, the award-winning Canadian horror-thriller SILENT RETREAT had its Hamilton Premiere at Fright Night Theatre as part of a fundraiser for the SACHA sexual assault centre at the Staircase Cafe Theatre. Thanks to the generosity of the filmmakers, our sponsors, and fans, Fright Night Theatre was able to raise $244.52 in support of SACHA's services for survivors of sexual assault and abuse.

I would like to thank everyone who came out last week to support Fright Night Theatre's initiative to raise money for the SACHA Sexual Assault Centre. SACHA is a feminist, non-profit, community-based organization of women in Hamilton, Ontario guided by anti-racist and anti-oppressive values working to end violence in our community. SACHA offers several invaluable programmes such as a 24 Hour Support LineCounselling and AdvocacyDiverse Communities Outreach, and Public Education. Services are confidential and completely free of charge

Recognizing dynamics of gender and power in sexual violence and the importance of organizations like SACHA, Fright Night Theatre invited director Tricia Lee and writer Corey Brown to screen their feminist horror film SILENT RETREAT in Hamilton as an official selection of Fright Night Theatre. We were honored to have Lee, Brown, and star Robert Nolan join to celebrate women in the horror industry, to raise money for SACHA, and to share their thoughts about how horror and the horror industry can be empowering to women.

We were also  joined in our efforts by a number of stellar local sponsors and local artists who donated valuable prizes, perks, and original artwork for our charity raffles. Fright Night Theatre would like to thank the following sponsors who were crucial in making our fundraiser a success:
Fright Night Theatre would also like to thank the following individuals for all their work and assistance:
Ann Hopkins, CF Benner, Chelsea Jenish, Cheyenne Federiconi, Chris Alexander, Chris Crash, Colette Kendall, Corey Brown, Courtney Make, Erin Crickett, Jacqueline de Schutter, Jefferey Watson, Leah Visser, Lenore Lukasik-Foss, Mark Furukawa, Mark Sims, Robert Nolan, Suzanne Kirkwood, Ted Dalgetty, Tina Hall, Tricia Lee.

August 08: SILENT RETREAT & SACHA FUNDRAISER

Fright Night Theatre is thrilled to announce the next installment in its competitive screening series: SILENT RETREAT

After taking home the award for Best Canadian Feature at Toronto After Dark and completing an extended theatrical run, director Tricia Lee's critically acclaimed horror thriller meets creature feature SILENT RETREAT will be making its Hamilton Premiere at Fright Night Theatre on Friday, August 08, 2014! In addition, Fright Night Theatre will be donating all net proceeds from the screening directly to SACHA - the sexual assault centre of Hamilton.

In SILENT RETREAT,  Janey (Chelsea Jenish), an orphaned
young woman with a troubled past, is sent to a
rehabilitation camp for young girls as an alternative to prison. The doctor overseeing this shady operation  (Robert Nolan) enforces a very strict policy: absolutely no speaking or noise-making whatsoever. No personal items. No direct eye contact with the camp administrators. What looks on the outside to be a rehabilitation camp quickly shows itself to be something far more sinister: a misogynistic experiment in social programming. Failure to comply, however, is punished not at the hands of the administrators but by the tooth and claw of a dangerous creature that stalks the dense, dark woods. The only way to survive the silence...is to SCREAM. Directed by Tricia Lee. Written by Corey Brown. CANADA, 2013, 84 mins. Screening with the short film PITY (dir. John Pata).
Director: Tricia Lee
